BUSY FOOTBALL WEEKEND FOR THE GAMBIA
Two Gambian league clubs Real De Banjul and Gamtel were at hand over the weekend in Banjul and Dakar for their respective CAF Champions League and Confederations Cup 2nd leg preliminaries. The Gambian league champions overcame their Moroccan equivalents 2-1 in Banjul thanks to Captain Baboucarr Savage's brace. But their ambitions to progress further to the next round of the qualifiers were shattered when FUS Rabat pulled one back ending their smiles but acclaimed spectator applause. FUS Rabat would therefore progress to the next stage of the CAF Champions League qualifiers.
In Dakar on Saturday, another Gambian club Gamtel travelled with their 2-1 lead to HLM and further dented a scar to the Dakar 2nd Div side when the Gambian lads completed their superiority over their hosts in 3-0 nil hauling at the Demba Diop stadium. The Gambian FA Champions and officials returns to Banjul on Sunday evening to prepare ahead of their next opponents from Tunisia.
Meanwhile, the Scorpions of the Gambia and the Maurabitones of Mauritania on Saturday ended their second warm up match at the Independence Stadium. The ten day training camp for the Mauritania National side was capped off with a goal less draw against the Home Based Scorpions of the Gambian after the visitors humiliated the local lads 2-1 in an earlier contest at mid week. The friendly internationals are meant to prepare the Gambian team ahead of their next crucial World Cup qualifier against Ivory Coast in Abidjan in March 23rd while Mauritania continues to hone their skills ahead of their CHAN qualifier against Senegal in June, 2013.
Meanwhile, the Gambia Football Association Normalisation Committee is talking of another possible friendly against a fellow West African side on the 16th of March shortly before travelling to Abidjan for the must win encounter against the Elephants.
